Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has secured a fourth non-consecutive term as Brazilian president after defeating right-wing Senator Flavio Bolsonaro in the Sunday runoff. The victory has triggered a wave of diplomatic responses, with foreign leaders expressing congratulations while some domestic and international critics questioned the procedural handling of the election.

The central point of contention involves a two-hour extension of voting hours. Justice Cristiano Zanin of the Supreme Court ordered the delay, a move that both candidates initially requested. Bolsonaro has formally asked for the vote to be annulled, labeling the extension unacceptable. This procedural dispute has fueled debate over the legitimacy of the final tally.

Leftist governments in the region responded with immediate celebration. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum posted on X, stating, "Long live democracy, the people of Brazil won." Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel described the result as historic, asserting it ensures the continuity of peace, sovereignty, and social justice. He pledged Cuba's support for Latin American unity and integration.

Other regional leaders emphasized practical cooperation. Chilean President Jose Antonio Kast phoned Lula to offer congratulations, noting that both nations would continue working on economic integration and combating organized crime. Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz framed the relationship as one between sister countries with shared challenges, promising efforts to generate new opportunities. Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino congratulated the Brazilian people on a democratic day.

In North America, reactions split along partisan lines. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney credited Lula with advancing bilateral relations and urged both sides to strengthen commercial and environmental ties. In the United States, Donald Trump Jr. criticized the outcome, pointing to the extended voting time. He argued that if a conservative government had implemented a similar measure, mainstream American media would have reacted strongly, suggesting the current silence stems from political cause.

Democratic figures in the U.S. expressed strong support. Senator Bernie Sanders called the win an extraordinary re-election victory, stating Lula has stood up for workers and democracy. Congressman Ro Khanna argued that authoritarian leaders attack democracy because they stand no chance against the will of the people, adding that President Donald Trump must respect the results. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani wrote on X that the people united will never be defeated, while the office of California Governor Gavin Newsom stated the governor stands with Brazil in defending democracy and workers' rights.
