Anthropic's IPO Set to Rewrite Wealth for Early Backers
As the AI giant prepares for a public listing, early investors and late-stage VCs stand to see their holdings multiply, with some stakes already reaching billions of dollars.

The impending public listing of Anthropic, expected to occur this year with a valuation potentially reaching two trillion dollars, represents a monumental shift in the financial landscape for its investors. While the eventual IPO price remains a target, the current private market valuation of $965 billion has already created a significant wealth event for venture capital firms and individual backers. The central tension lies in the disparity between entry points and current valuations, highlighting how early risk-taking is now translating into multi-billion dollar windfalls even before the company goes public.
The timeline of Anthropic's growth illustrates the rapid appreciation of these stakes. In 2021, the company was valued at just $461 million. By 2023, the valuation had surged to $5 billion. The trajectory accelerated further in 2025, with the company reaching a $183 billion valuation, before climbing to $380 billion earlier this year. Now, at the latest private market price of $965 billion, the financial position of key stakeholders has transformed dramatically.
Eric Schmidt, the former Google CEO, exemplifies the reward for early engagement. He participated in Anthropic’s Series A in 2021, when the startup’s worth was a fraction of its current value. Today, Schmidt holds approximately 1% of the company. At the current private valuation, his stake is worth nearly $10 billion, a figure that underscores the impact of entering at the $461 million mark.
Later-stage investors have also seen substantial returns, though their risk profiles differed. Iconiq invested $6 billion in the company last year, when it was already valued at $183 billion. That massive late-stage bet is currently worth $17 billion, with the potential to double upon the IPO. Similarly, Menlo Ventures, which led the Series D, has invested over $1 billion over time. Their current stake is valued at $14 billion, reflecting the firm's sustained commitment to the AI lab.
Sequoia entered the picture much later this year, backing the company when its valuation had already reached $380 billion. The firm’s $3 billion investment secured approximately 1% ownership. This strategic move has already more than doubled Sequoia's initial investment, demonstrating that even late entry into a high-growth sector can yield significant financial gains.
Sound Ventures, co-founded by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, took a different approach by increasing its exposure over time. The firm initially invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round. It subsequently funneled an additional $400 million into the company, resulting in a stake now worth billions. Notably, Kutcher left Sound Ventures this year to launch a new venture capital firm, though the existing Anthropic stake remains a significant asset for the partnership.
Perhaps the most dramatic appreciation belongs to Spark Capital, the only VC firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic. The firm invested $75 million in the 2023 Series C round, when the company was valued at $5 billion. That position has since ballooned more than ninetyfold to a value of $7 billion. As the company moves toward its public listing, these figures are not static; they represent a baseline that may increase further, setting the stage for one of the largest wealth creation events in recent tech history.
The next phase for Anthropic is the formalization of its public market debut. With a valuation target of up to $2 trillion, the IPO will likely reprice these stakes significantly. For the Southwest and broader national markets, this event signals a maturation of the AI sector, where early private bets are beginning to materialize into tangible, large-scale financial outcomes for a diverse group of institutional and individual investors.
