OpenAI Seeks New Billions Instead of IPO
The artificial intelligence firm is reportedly pursuing a massive funding round, bypassing a public market debut for now.

A potential public debut is on hold. OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is reportedly moving forward with another enormous round of private financing, steering clear of an IPO for the time being. The company is in advanced discussions to secure up to $30 billion in new capital.
The proposed funding would establish a pre-money valuation of $1.25 trillion, a figure that would make it the most highly valued private company in history. The round is reportedly being led by Coatue and investors from the United Arab Emirates. If finalized at that level, the valuation would significantly surpass the $852 billion post-money figure from its previous funding round in March.
It remains unclear if the transaction is finalized. Sources indicate that the specific terms are still under negotiation and could change. Reports from earlier this month indicated a potential $1.4 trillion valuation for a $30 billion raise, highlighting the fluid nature of the discussions. A company representative declined to comment on the matter.
There is also a potential link between the capital and infrastructure. According to reports, the funding from the UAE could be connected to an agreement providing OpenAI with additional computing capacity from that nation. Securing more processing power is a persistent challenge for companies developing large-scale artificial intelligence models.
The high valuation sought by OpenAI could directly influence the market environment for a potential rival. Anthropic, another major AI lab, is reportedly seeking a valuation between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion for its own public debut. Anthropic raised $65 billion at a $965 billion valuation in May, a move seen at the time as its final private round before an IPO.
Both firms filed confidential paperwork for a public offering in June. While Anthropic’s filing could appear shortly, OpenAI’s current fundraising efforts suggest it is not ready to move to the public markets. The company’s last private round in March valued the firm at $852 billion post-money.
The potential for a $1.25 trillion valuation would set a new record for a private company. However, all details remain subject to change until the negotiations are concluded. Neither company has announced a definitive date for a public offering.
