1,300 Acres Cleared, Wolves Now Roaming Finnish Villages
Google's unauthorized forest clearings near Muhos have forced wild animals out of their habitat and into neighboring communities.

Wolves are now wandering into Finnish villages after Google cleared more than a thousand acres of forest to make way for new data centers, a development that has triggered a fresh wave of complaints about the tech giant's aggressive expansion plans. The company's country manager for Finland has issued an apology regarding unauthorized clearing operations that turned 816 acres of woodland into mud. Furthermore, Google has been directed to halt activities on another 500 acres located southeast of Otanmäki.
The scale of the destruction has altered the local ecosystem significantly. What were once thriving forests where wolf packs resided are now described as barren, muddy wastelands. Because the animals have been displaced from their natural habitat, they are now appearing in nearby populated areas. Anni Ranta, 53, a resident whose family has lived in Otanmäki for generations, explained the situation. "We had wolves coming into the village because all the wild animals moved out of the forest," Ranta said.
This encroachment of wildlife into residential zones raises concerns regarding human safety. Beyond the immediate danger posed by predators, residents are voicing other grievances. Local complaints include increased noise from construction and factory operations, streams that have turned brown, and the displacement of rare bird species. Anni Ranta also expressed worry regarding the geopolitical implications of the infrastructure, noting fears that U.S.-owned data centers could make Finland a more attractive target for Russian aggression.
Regulators have responded to the unauthorized work with strict orders. The Finnish Licensing and Supervision Authority issued a directive for Google to stop development near Muhos and Otanmäki. This action follows a similar notice regarding construction activities in Kajaani. The Finnish Association for Nature Conservation stated that Google's disregard for environmental policy has been unprecedented and clear. Despite the regulatory pushback, Google remains committed to the project.
A Google spokesperson addressed the situation by stating, "We will fully comply with LVV's requests in this matter." The spokesperson added that the company looks forward to maintaining an active, open dialogue with all authorities to strengthen its partnership with Finland and local organizations. The company continues to push forward with plans to build data centers in the region.
