The Spanish football federation has postponed 24 first-round Copa del Rey matches scheduled for Wednesday evening.

The delay serves as a mark of respect following a high-speed train collision in the province of Toledo that killed at least 30 people.

Castilla-La Mancha regional president Emiliano García-Page confirmed the death toll at a minimum of 30, warning that the number could increase. He also stated that at least 80 individuals sustained injuries in the crash.

The accident occurred on Wednesday morning near Urda station on the line connecting Madrid and Sevilla. Two high-speed trains were involved in the impact: one operated by Renfe, the national carrier, and the other by private operator Iryo. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the collision.

The RFEF issued a statement ordering the suspension of the 24 games originally slated for the night. The federation said the decision reflects solidarity with the victims of the accident. It added that the Spanish football community is available to assist authorities in supporting the injured and their families.

The Copa del Rey first round began on Tuesday with 18 completed matches. Another 14 games were scheduled for Thursday, and it remains undecided whether those fixtures will proceed as planned. The RFEF has not yet released a revised schedule or definitive dates for the postponed Wednesday matches.

Spain’s royal family posted a message on social media expressing that they were moved and worried by the tragedy. They sent affection to the injured and their families and acknowledged the efforts of emergency teams working in the area. Real Sociedad defeated Atlético Madrid in last year’s final, while Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atlético Madrid will not enter the current tournament until the round of 32.
