A routine morning commute for an elderly Bronx couple turned violent just before dawn on Monday.
Emelia Sabah says her 73-year-old father walks her 61-year-old mother to the Gun Hill Road bus stop every weekday to ensure her safety. On Monday, while the pair waited near 5 a.m., four masked individuals arrived on motorcycles. According to Sabah, the group split up, with two suspects attacking her father with guns and the other two assaulting her mother. "They hit her stomach, and then she said they point the gun in her stomach and hit her mouth with the gun," Sabah told KCNC-TV. She added that her mother was screaming during the assault.
The suspects fled with the woman's purse, which contained a debit card, prescription medication, and $100 in cash. Sabah, who described her mother as a home attendant with 11 grandchildren, expressed frustration at the suspects' youth and strength. "As young as you people are, like, you have the strength to go out and do something, get your own money," she said. The incident has left the 61-year-old woman fearful of using public transit again.
The NYPD is actively searching for the four suspects. The department is asking the public to call the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or 1-888-57-PISTA (74782) for Spanish. Tips can also be submitted via the Crime Stoppers website or by direct message on X to @NYPDTips. All calls remain confidential.
