Justin Jefferson is averaging 60.4 receiving yards per game through the first seven weeks of the 2026 NFL season. That total is the lowest figure he has posted at this point in his seven-year career. He has recorded 23 receptions and 31 targets, marking a sharp decline in his individual statistical output.

The Vikings sit at 6-0, the only undefeated team in the league. Jefferson told reporters on Wednesday that the contrast between the team's success and his personal numbers creates a complicated emotional state. He described the situation as an in-between feeling, noting that he would prefer winning games over having big production numbers.

A sprained left ankle has limited Jefferson's availability this season. He missed one full game and played in a limited capacity during another contest. The Vikings have already used their bye week, a factor Jefferson cited when explaining why he has not pressured the coaching staff for more targets. Currently, 71 NFL players have received more targets than Jefferson.

Coach Kevin O'Connell is managing the offense around new quarterback Kyler Murray. The strategy prioritizes making the quarterback comfortable while relying on Minnesota's high-ranked defense and special teams unit. The offense leans heavily on the ground game, ranking fourth in the league with a 43.3% rate of designed runs. The team also ranks second in the fewest dropbacks, having attempted 198 passes.

O'Connell acknowledged the shift in play-calling style. He noted that past seasons involved a much higher volume of throws. When a team leads in early-down rushing attempts to control the game, the number of passes can shrink. However, O'Connell stated that Jefferson remains the team's best player and that the coaching staff must find ways to activate him more frequently.

Jefferson believes the current offensive approach is working for the team. He admitted there are still areas for improvement but said the unit is coming together. The Vikings now enter a difficult stretch of their schedule. They travel to face the Detroit Lions this week before hosting the Buffalo Bills, Green Bay Packers, and San Francisco 49ers.
