Colorado State wide receiver Tommy Maher caught six passes for a career-high 108 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday's win over San Diego State.
The performance marked a new personal best for the Rams receiver, who has transformed from a non-scholarship walk-on into a primary target for quarterback Hauss Hejny.
Maher arrived at Colorado State before the 2024 season without a scholarship offer. He was recruited by former head coach Jay Norvell but had to earn his spot on the roster.
During his freshman year, Maher appeared in five games and finished with four receptions for 99 yards and one touchdown. His first score came in the season finale against Wyoming.
Following that game, the coaching staff awarded Maher a full scholarship. The former walk-on was notified in the locker room by Norvell.
Maher returned in 2025 to play in all 12 games. He caught 32 passes for 358 yards despite a mid-season coaching change. He chose to return for his junior year under head coach Jim Mora.
Injuries limited Maher early in the current season. He suffered a hamstring pull in the season opener against Wyoming after recording three catches for 43 yards. He missed the following game against Southern Utah.
The receiver played in limited capacity against BYU but felt fully recovered by the time Colorado State faced UTSA. His Saturday performance against San Diego State was his first full game with Hejny this season.
Mora described Maher as a reliable and consistent worker. The coach noted that Maher knows what to do and executes his assignments effectively.
Maher and Hejny had not shared a full game due to their respective injuries earlier in the schedule. Their connection was evident in Saturday's scoring drive.
The Rams offense posted 549 total yards and 56 points in the victory. Maher said the unit is operating at a high level and continues to improve.
Colorado State travels to Utah State on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The game will air on USA Network.
