A fan from Hampton, New Hampshire, stood in a line at the Market Basket in Chelsea, Massachusetts, for six hours on Tuesday morning to secure a signed poster from New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye. The event, hosted by Athletic Brewing, distributed signed posters to the first 200 people who arrived at the store.
Supporters traveled from across Chelsea and from other states to attend the meet-and-greet. Many brought artwork and well-wishes for the remainder of the season. One senior couple told Maye that they always include him in their prayers.
The Hampton fan, who arrived at 1 a.m., said the entire town seemed to show up for the event. "Everybody in Chelsea showed up for Drake Maye. A great day for it," the fan said. Most attendees left with a new photo for their social media profiles.
Two roommates who waited four hours for their turn described the experience as a shock after seeing Maye only on television. "We waited in line for four hours, but it was so worth it. We're so used to seeing him on TV, so seeing him in person was like oh my God!" they said. They planned to share the story with their teacher and friends on Wednesday.
A father brought his seven-year-old son, who had skipped school so his mother could pick him up and drive him to the store. The boy had identified Maye as his hero. When the father asked what his son told the quarterback, he reported that the boy said, "I hope you go to the Super Bowl this year."
