Three people were hospitalized after a fire consumed a multi-family dwelling in Dorchester on Saturday morning.
Boston Fire Department units arrived on Kerwin Street shortly before 8:00 a.m. for a two-alarm response. The incident displaced eight adults and three children. All three individuals transported to the hospital are expected to make a full recovery, according to the department.
Kevaugh Davis, a resident, woke to smoke in his room. He observed flames emerging from his mother's closed door, where her mattress was burning. Davis called 911 and alerted neighbors upstairs. The fire spread to all three floors and the adjacent structure. District Fire Chief Harry Brienza noted that a shift change allowed double the usual crew response. Off-duty firefighters also arrived, assisting in the rescue of eight people via rear ladders.
Dana Voronina, who lives across the street, described the scene as scary and close. She prayed for the safety of those who escaped. Davis stated that while possessions were lost, he was relieved everyone survived. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The Red Cross is currently assisting the displaced residents.
The fire department confirmed the number of displaced individuals and the hospitalizations. The investigation into the fire's origin is ongoing. The Red Cross continues to provide support to the families affected by the blaze on Kerwin Street.
