Bayern Munich advanced to the next round of the German Cup with a 6-1 win over second-tier Magdeburg on Wednesday. The match allowed the squad to celebrate Harry Kane, who won the Ballon d'Or on Monday. Kane, 33, remained on the bench for the entire duration of the game.
The award marks a historic moment for the England captain. He is the first English player to win the individual prize since Michael Owen in 2001. He is also the first Bayern player to claim it in 45 years and the first at a German club since 1996. The club decided to rest him two days after the ceremony to manage his workload before a busy schedule of domestic and European matches.
Kane received a guard of honor before kickoff and waved to fans at the Allianz Arena. Supporters plan to honor him again before Saturday's Bundesliga match against Borussia Dortmund. That game features the two teams tied for first place in the league table.
Michael Olise scored twice for Bayern. Ismael Saibari of Magdeburg scored between those two goals. The visitors also hit the post just before the first half ended. After the break, Alphonso Davies and Nathaniel Brown scored within three minutes of each other. Teenager David Santos Daiber added the final goal in stoppage time.
Assistant coach Aaron Danks managed the team from the bench for the second game in a row. He also led the squad to a 3-1 win at Freiburg on Sunday. Danks stepped in after head coach Vincent Kompany collapsed during a training session last week.
Board member Max Eberl said Kompany was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday. The Belgian coach had been admitted on Friday after collapsing during a second team training session. Eberl told broadcaster ARD that Kompany is recovering from a meningeal irritation. "He will now rest and take medication, and I am certain that he will very soon be back on the touchline, operating at 100 percent," Eberl said. No specific return date has been set. Kompany will resume his duties only after medical clearance.
Bayern currently lead the Bundesliga race. They will face Atletico Madrid in Spain next week in the Champions League following their match against Dortmund.
