A corrections officer at the Jackson County Detention Center is now in custody on drug smuggling charges.
Jeremy Z. Mfundu was arrested on October 16 as he arrived for his shift. Prosecutors filed one count of delivering a prohibited article into the jail and one count of attempting to distribute a controlled substance.
Court documents indicate investigators learned inmates possessed sheets of LSD papers inside the facility. Two weeks later, a confidential informant provided a phone number to detectives. A database search linked that number to Mfundu's personnel file at the detention facility.
Officers recorded a phone conversation between the informant and Mfundu. During the call, Mfundu said he would meet the informant to pick up the paperwork. The probable cause statement notes Mfundu admitted to giving his cell number to an inmate and taking the papers with the intent to smuggle them inside.
Mfundu stated he did not know exactly what the papers were but acknowledged they were contraband. He is currently charged in connection with the movement of the items into the Jackson County Detention Facility.
